Haiti Relief
// September 16th, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
My good friend Cody recently got back from Haiti.
Through his work with the North American Mission Board, Cody is helping funnel relief funds to Haiti with the recent crisis. Here is a brief update from his blog:
I just got off the phone with one of our contacts where we were working in Haiti and was told that the death toll is now over 500 and still climbing due to the hurricanes that have devastated Haiti. People are literally starving to death and dying of thirst because of all of the flooding.
The village where we just returned from, Camp Coq (a tiny village 2 hours from the city of Cape Haitien) has been devastated. Homes where we were just visiting last week are completely gone. The church and orphanage are ok, and any other home made of concrete. But the homes that are not made of concrete have been destroyed.
Jamare’s home has been destroyed. Where will she go?
You can read all the details here, and see some great photos from his trip to Haiti.
He also has an update here on how the Delaware Baptist Association is getting involved.
I agree with Cody’s encourgement to get involved with prayer and giving.
Brandon Heath – Give Me Your Eyes
// September 4th, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
My cool sis Natalie pointed out that the song “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath reminded her of what we’re doing on the streets of Wilmington. Brandon Heath also reminds me a little of Matt Kearny.
I like the lyrics – Give me your eyes so I can see everything that I keep missing.
Look down from a broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight
Touch down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breathe in the familiar shock
Of confusion and chaos
All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared
Chorus:
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see
Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what’s underneath
There’s a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
Too ashamed to tell his wife
He’s out of work, he’s buying time
All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared
Chorus
I’ve been here a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
Well, I want a second glance
So give me a second chance
To see the way You’ve seen the people all along
how to help homeless people according to eli (6) and eden (4)
// August 23rd, 2008 // No Comments » // homeless
A while ago, I was sitting with my six year old son and my four year old daughter. We were talking about Herman and they were asking why people were homeless. I asked them for their ideas on how to help homeless people. Below are their ideas. I thought it was funny that Eli started by saying that we needed some building plans. And Eden was concerned that they needed trash cans and markers…kids are pretty insightful.

The Ordianary Radicals film – can you spot Herman?
// August 13th, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
Check out this trailer for the Ordinary Radicals film that releases this fall. This is an independent documentary produced by Jamie Moffett.
Can you spot Herman? About a minute into the trailer, you can see the back of my head as the shot is on the park bench. It pans out to a shot with Ben and Herman standing in Chistina Park. This footage was taken while we were playing chess with Herman.

Keep praying for Herman, he seems to be doing much better after his visit to prison. He’s out now, and back living on the street. I’ve met up with him several times since he was released. I even took him back to prison to pick up his cross. That was interesting.
The Shack – William P. Young interview
// August 9th, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
UPDATE: They put the interview back up – it’s streaming again. Go check it out.
William P. Young “Willie”, the author of The Shack, was interviewed as part of the summer series of 7|22 in Atlanta, Ga.
7|22 is a young adult gathering, and they stream their worship and teaching online. Very cool, for someone like me – who can’t get enough worship on Sunday…
Anyway, I happened to listen to this interview and I was really amazed at the true story behind the Shack. If you’ve already read The Shack (or even if you are one of the few who hasn’t) – you seriously need to watch this interview. Seriously!
Then click on “All Access” at the bottom of the page.
Then launch the flash player by clicking the “F” flash symbol for the 6/24 gathering, it looks like this…

The worship at the beginning is lead by Eddie Kirkland, a worship leader @ Northpoint church. You can skip to the interview if you want, but the worship that Eddie leads is really great too.
The cool thing about the interview, is that you really get a sense of how the book originated – it’s built around the amazing true life story of Willie. In real life, Willie grew up as a missionary kid in papua new guinea and he openly talks about the abuse he endured as a kid…this relates to The Great Sadness and The Shack.
Tony first told us about the Shack last spring. Libby read it in 4 days – she could really relate because of some of the things she’s been dealing with.
Hope you guys enjoy the interview. Let me know what you think…
Conquering – Charity George
// July 31st, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
Jeremy George was in our youth group when Libby and I were youth leaders @ Bethel. And Libby taught with Jeremy’s wife Charity at Bethel Preschool. Jeremy went on to become a youth pastor in Michigan.
About a year ago, Charity (a young wife and mother of 2) suddenly experienced stroke like symptoms for what they think was a lesion on her brain. Over a very short time her health quickly spiraled downward. This video documents her story and ongoing recovery over the last year. She is conquering.
Please watch this video and begin praying for Charity’s recovery. You can read more about Charity and Jeremy on their website – www.charitygeorge.com
Jeremy and Charity are full of life – and they are living in the Spirit of God.

praying kids
// July 15th, 2008 // No Comments » // journal
Most nights I “put the kids down”. At least Eli and Eden, and some nights Silas too. We have this elaborate bedtime routine, which Eli doesn’t let me break easily. One of the things we do is pray (of course!)
Man, I love hearing Eli and Eden pray…they are brutally honest most of the time…here are a couple from tonight.
Eli (thinking worst case scenario) asked,
Dad, if you were praying at church and something caught on fire, what would you do?
I had to think about that one. Still not sure what I would do.
Eden prayed (in her honest trusting squeaky voice),
Thank you God for making me good.
Wow.
Kids are crazy cool.

I’m sorry for not updating you on Herman…
I still meet with Herman almost every Wednesday.
Herman is still on the street. We still have the money sitting/waiting for him…I still give him clothes and food (And Bibles – which he in turn hands out
– but he’s not open to getting counseling right now. After his time in prison, he had a good stretch where he showed some improvement towards his outlook.
Now he’s back in a rut…causing trouble on the street…but we’re still his friend, still trying to love on him.
I will bring some new love to the blog SOON!
